Things You Can Do To Have a Better Brain

Get Eight Hours’ Sleep Every Night

If you want to function at your mental and physical peak, make sure you get seven to eight hours of sleep on most nights. (On average, we sleep 20 percent less than we did a hundred years ago when nine and a half hours of sleep a night was the norm.) Constant sleep deprivation is very bad for your brain, for both the short term and the long term. Even a mild sleep deficit—getting six hours of sleep for a few nights in a row instead of eight hours—will slow you down and cause notable decline in performance on standard mental function tests. Moreover, when you’re tired, you’re more likely to be irritable and have less mental and emotional stamina. Tired people misplace things more often, have more trouble recalling information, and in general are not as sharp as those who get enough sleep.

Sleep serves an important purpose for your brain. Sleep is a time when our cells can do vital repair work, “cleaning up” toxins that accumulate in the brain and keeping brain cells in optimal condition. If you don’t allow your brain to do this essential housekeeping, toxins will accumulate in your brain over time and accelerate brain aging. Sleep is also a time when your brain processes new information. A good night’s sleep can enhance your ability to learn and understand new concepts. In sum, if you don’t get enough sleep, your brain will pay the price.

Think Twice Before Taking a Drug

If you are routinely taking a prescription or over-the-counter medicine (three times a week or more) be sure that it is not depleting your brain of important nutrients. Why DHA? Have Some Fun

Make recreational activity a part of your life. It will make you smarter and happier and keep your brain going longer. My only requirement is that you choose an activity that you don’t normally do every day as part of your job. Play an instrument. Play bridge. Join a book club. Make pottery. Whatever you choose to do, recreational activity is good for your brain for several reasons. First, it’s a great way to relieve stress. When you’re concentrating on an activity that you enjoy, it’s possible to shut out all the irritants that tie you up in knots and send potentially damaging stress hormones soaring. Second, when you stimulate brain cells with a new challenge, you make new dendrites, the connections between neurons that are essential for the assimilation and processing of information. The more dendrites you have, the better your brain cells can communicate, and the “smarter” you will be. An added bonus: Studies show that people who do some activity beyond work are at lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease than people who don’t. So go out and have some fun. Doctor’s orders!

REASON 1: PWEDE BUMILI NG DIPLOMA SA RECTO

Dalawa lang naman main purpose bakit may diploma. Una, para magamit sa paghahanap ng trabaho at para may mai-display mga magulang mo sa dingding niyo.

So kailangan mo ng trabaho? Punta lang sa Recto at wala pang 24 hours may diploma ka na! Pwede ka na mag-apply sa trabahong pinapangarap mo! Madami na nakapag-abroad dahil sa mga pekeng dokumento galing sa Recto. So wag na magpahuli!

REASON 2: WALANG SILBI ANG MATH SA LAWYER  AT PANG-BILYAR LANG NAMAN ANG GEOMETRY SABI NI FRANCIS CHIZ ESCUDERO NOONG 2006

O di ba? Ang idol niyong si Chiz eh di naman nagamit ang Algebra, Trigonometry at Calculus sa pagiging abugado at politician niya!

So bakit mag-aral ng math eh kailangan mo lang naman i-impress mga Pilipino sa pagsasalita ng tagalog. Nevermind kung contradicting o redundant mga sinasabi mo kasi di naman nila yun mapapasin. Kung mapansin man nila, san sila magrereklamo?

Tsaka, kung gusto ng batang nag-aaral ng elementarya/high school matuto ng Algebra Trigonometry at Calculus, bahala siya sa buhay niya, magdesisyon na siya para sa kanyang sarili. Matanda na siya para malaman if gusto niya mag-engineer o kumuha ng kursong madaming math.

So kung gusto mong maging sikat na politician, laway lang puhunan mo. Magdasal ka lang na walang mandaraya sayo sa posiyentuhan sa mga kickback sa mga proyekto ng gobyerno, at magpanggap na lang na masakit ang ulo kung may magpresent sa iyo ng mga economic reports or proposals  na may numbers na tungkol sa ekomiya na nakabase sa mathematical computations. ;)

Tsaka bakit pa mag-aaral ng History eh nakaraan na nga. Dapat na mag-move on na sa past!

Bakit mag-aaral ng Chemistry? Toyo patis at suka lang naman paghahaluin mo pag kakain ka. Bakit kelangan mo bang alamin kung acid o base ang ang pagkain para mabusog ka? Basta may pagkain ka sa harap mo, mabubuhay ka na!

Bakit pa may Values Education? Eh yung mga pulitiko nga natin sila mismo nanloloko sa atin! Sila ang mas may kailangan nun hindi ang mga ordinaryong Pinoy! Kung minsan nga mga nagtuturo mismo walang values. :p

Bakit pa mag-aaral ng Science eh mamamatay din lang naman tayong lahat. So wag na pag-aralan mga living at non-living things kasi darating ang panahon na magiging non-living things na rin lang lahat. Kapag abo na tayo, wala na bearing kung ano man grade mo sa mga subjects mo.

Bakit pa merong PE? Pagod ka na nga kakalakad sa buong campus, pagtetext, facebook, pag copy-paste ng project sa internet at pangongopya ng assignments tapos papagurin ka pa pagtakbo takbo sa basketbol court? Makatao ba yun?!!

Buti pa yung ROTC may silbi. Nakakapraktis ka kumanta kapag late ka dumating. Sing and dance pa ipapagawa sa iyo depende sa topak ni Officer. Siyempre tuwang tuwa ka naman kasi yun naman pangarap mo sa buhay mo, ang makapagperform sa harap ng mga tao! Stepping stone para sa Talentadong Pinoy at Pilipinas Got Untalented Judge.

REASON 3: KAWAWA ANG MGA BUSINESSMEN AT MEDIA PAG MATALINO NA ANG MGA PINOY

Imagine mo na lang kung lalawak ang pang-unawa ng mga Pinoy sa pagdedesisyon. Di na sila basta basta maloloko ng mga advertisement sa TV. Mahihirapan sila magbenta ng mga walang kwentang produkto nila. So paano na sila makakabakasyon sa Boracay?

Paano na ang pagbili nila ng mga malalawak na bukirin na papatayuan nila ng mga mansiyon nila kapag na-realize ng mga Pinoy na mas mabisa pa rin ang ampalaya, malunggay, atbp. sa palengke kesa sa mga pinatuyo at giniling na gulay na nasa loob ng kapsula?

Kawawa si businessman. Paano na ang mga electric bills, water bills, phone bills, allowance ng mga anak, allowance ng mga anak sa labas, panggastos ng pamilya, panggastos ng pamilya sa kabit , atbp., kung marealize ng mga Pinoy na di naman ibig sabihin na pag mas mahal eh mas matibay, mas mahal mas maganda, na pag mas mura mas lowtech...

Kawawa din ang media kapag matalino ang mga Pinoy kasi marerealize nila na nakakabobo na mga telenobela at ibang palabas sa local tv. Babawalan na rin nila mga anak nila manood ng tv kasi puro lang naman katarantaduhan natutunan nila sa local tv.

Kawawa din ang mga reporter kasi mawawalan na sila ng kredibilidad pag malaman nila na madali lang pala balubaluktutin ang mga impormasyon para maging pabor sa sino mang gustong magbayad.

REASON 4: DI NAMAN KAILANGAN MAG-ARAL PARA UMASENSO SA BUHAY

Sa tingin mo, lahat ba ng nakapagtapos ng pag-aaral eh maganda ang trabaho at malaki ang sweldo?

Pwede ka naman tumaya sa lotto. Pag manalo ka, di mo na kailangan magtrabaho!

Pwede ka naman magshowbiz. Natural naman sa mga Pilipino ang mag-acting . Konting praktis lang sa harap ng salamin at ilang kanta lang sa videoke pwede na! Di naman kailangan na sobrang galing ka para makapasok sa showbiz. Nood ka ng ASAP at SOP tuwing linggo at pakinggan mga mag-labtim na kumakanta. Mas maganda pa pagkanta ng kabitbahay niyong kinaiinisan mo kasi ang lakas pag magvideoke sila.

Kung pangit ka naman, pwede ka magpabatok batok at magpainsulto. Instant komedyante ka na!

Kung guwapo at maganda ka, magpa-cute ka lang pwede na! Wag mo na isipin acting mo. Mukha lang naman tinitingnan ng mga Pinoy. Basta guwapo at maganda, pwede na kahit gasgas na rin ang kwento ng pelikula o telenobela.

Kung anak ka ng sikat na tao, mas madali naman ang pagsikat mo!

Kahit di ka nakapag-aral, pwede ka rin magbusiness. Madali lang suhulan ang mga nasa gobyerno para makakuha ng kung anu-anung permit kahit di ka mag-comply sa mga requirements.

Kung medyo walang koneksiyon o padrino, mag-squat ka sa lupa ng gobyerno. Magpatayo ng bahay na maraming kwarto. Iparenta ang mga bakanteng kwarto para may income ka. Kung papaalisin na kayo sa lupa kung saan kayo illegal na nakatira, pwede kayo humingi ng relocation ayon sa batas. Tapos ibenta mo ang lupa at bahay na ibibigay sayo at mag-squat ulit sa bakanteng lupa ng gobyerno.

Kung wala talaga swerte, mamalimos ka na lang. Hanap ka lang ng lugar na daanan ng tao, maglagay  ng lata sa harap mo, at maghintay na bumuhos ang pera. Pag medyo may asenso na ng konti, pwede ka na mag-hire ng tagapalimos at magpatayo ng branch sa lahat ng sulok ng siyudad.

REASON 5: DI NAMAN IBIG SABIHIN NA KAPAG MATAAS GRADE MO, MAGALING KA NA

Sa quiz, kapag ba mas mataas ang nakuha ni Pedro kaysa kay Juan, ibig bang sabihin na mas matalino at mas magaling na si Pedro kesa kay Juan? Di ba pwedeng nangopya muna o may kodigo o tsamba lang sa multiple choice at true or false?

Kapag ba sa UP, Ateneo, La Salle o Andres Bukid Elementary School na nagtapos mas magaling na siya kesa sa mga nagtapos ng STI, AMA, Pacman University (PAC-U), Harvard o Yale?

Di naman reliable yang mga grades na binibigay ng mga teacher. Porke ba di mo alam mga gusto niyang malaman mo, bobo ka na? Di ba pwedeng mas gusto mo lang piliin mga maling sagot? Di ba pwedeng mali naman piliin? Kasi nakakasawa na piliin mga tama. Tutal, mas ‘in’ naman ngayon mga mali. Mas pasaway ka, mas sikat ka sa barkada! Tingnan mo ngayon kung sino mga sikat, mga may kaso at criminal!

Tsaka mababasa mo naman sa internet mga tinuturo ngayon sa mga paaralan. So what’s the point na pumasok pa ng school?

REASON 6: LAHAT NAMAN PUMAPASA SA ELEMENTARY AT HIGH SCHOOL BASTA REGULAR KA LANG NA PUMASOK AT WAG GUMAWA NG KATARANTADUHAN

Pansinin mo, sa quiz or exam niyo noong elementary at high school, kahit 1 out of 50, o kahit bokya man score, pasado pa rin!

So bakit pa papapasukin ang mga bata kung papasa din lang naman sila kahit may matutunan/malaman man sila o wala? Gastos lang sa uniporme, books, raket na film showing ni teacher, panindang pulburon ni teacher, at projects na halaman at parol tuwing pasko.

Madali ka rin lang makatuntong sa college kasi matrabaho magbagsak ng istudyante sa sa high school. Kailangan mo i-justify bakit siya bagsak. So para wala na paliwanagan, ipasa na lang. Pagdating mo naman ng college, pumili ka lang ng business oriented na school. Kasi wala naman sila pakialam kung may matutunan man students nila. Importante, malaki population ng school para mas madami kita sa tuition. Pag marami kayong binagsak ng Propesor, isumbong mo sa may-ari ng school at sabihin na di marunong magturo ang Prof. Papagalitan ang Prof at kung suswertehin, papalitan ng pasado ang grade niyo. Malas mo na lang kung magresign si Prof kasi di niya masikmura pamamalakad ng school admin.

REASON 7: DI NAMAN TAYO AMERIKANO, HAPON, O TAGA EUROPA PARA MAG-ARAL NG MGA MATATAAS NA URI NG ARALIN

Wala rin lang naman tayong sapat na pasilidad para magamit ang mga latest na discoveries sa sciences at technology so bakit pa pag-aaralan?

Tsaka kuntento na tayo sa mga scrap machines galing sa Japan at Korea. Konting repair lang, pintura at washing pwedeng na ipasada! Bahala na ibang bansa mag-imbento ng kung anu-ano. Umasa na lang tayo sa mga basura nila. Tutal, high-tech naman mga yun dati. Magastos at walang kasiguruhan kung magresearch. Nakakapagod pa sa utak. Kawawa lang mga scientists natin.

REASON 8: MAHIRAP MANGAMPANYA TUWING ELEKSIYON PAG MATATALINO O NAG-IISIP ANG MGA BOTANTE

Imagine na lang ang hirap na daranasin ng mga pulitiko natin tuwing eleksiyon pag nag-iisip na ang mga botante! Di na sila madadaan sa pasayaw sayaw at pagkanta kanta ng mga kandidato. Maghahanap na ang mga botante ng mga plataporma at magtatanong na kung paano maipapatupad ang mga plataporma. Hindi yung pangako ng kung anu-ano pero puro naman suntok sa buwan. Yung tipong kailangan mo superpowers nina Son Goku, Naruto, Gundam Wings, Panday, Barney at Teletubies para lang maipatupad ang mga pangako.

Marerealize na rin ng mga tao na ang mga pulitiko ay ‘public servant’ at di ‘public master’. So mahirap na mang-uto at manggamit ng mga tao para sa pansariling kapakanan ng ating mga napakasipag at napaka-productive na pulitiko.

REASON 9: PWEDENG SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT ANG KABOBOHAN

Ang boring kaya ng buhay pag matalino lahat ng tao.

Pag kambing ka at may narinig ka na nagsabi ng “may nakita akong kambing na 3 ang paa”, wag ka magalit kasi di naman ibig sabihin nun na lahat ng kambing ay 3 lang ang paa!

Pag kamukha mo si Angel Locsin at may nakita kang pangit na sinabihan na kamukha siya ni Angel Locsin, wag ka mainsulto kasi di naman niya sinabi na pangit ka. Malamang nambobola lang yun o sumisipsip para sa promotion!

Ito true-to-lie story sa bario namin. Si Boy Tutpik sinabihan si Manang Paa na mukha daw siyang sapatos. Nakarating kay Aling Sapatos ang kwento at nainsulto kasi ikinumpara daw siya kay Manang Paa. Kaya dun nagsimula ang away.  Pero kung iisipin mo, sinabi ni Boy Tutpik na si Manang Paa ay Mukhang Sapatos. Si naman niya sinabi na Si Aling Sapatos ay mukhang paa. Magkaiba yun! Kaya ngayon, pag nagbabangayan sila, andami nilang napapasayang kalyo, kuto at at buhok sa kilikili.

Speaking of bangayan, nakakatuwa din ang ginagawang kabobohan ng media. May interview sila kay Senador Baliw  at may nasabi siya na tungkol sa anak ni Nanay Panget. Interview din nila si Nanay Panget para patas daw. Tapos magiging headline na, SENADOR BALIW AT NANAY PANGIT, NAGBANGAYAN! Di ba media tagabalita lang? Bakit parang sila na nagdidikta ng takbo ng balita? Kasi magbabangayan ba sila kung di sila na-interview? Buti sana nakita o nadatnan na nila sila na nagbabangayan. Eh hindi eh. Ganun pa man, napasaya nila ang manonood. Wag na isipin ang serbisyo publiko o responsible journalism. Mas importante ang RATINGS para mataas ang kita!

Mr. Speaker, ang isang dahilan kung bakit kada taon marami tayong classrooms na kinakailangan ay dahil napakaraming nasisira sa kakulangan ng supisyenteng pondo para i-maintain at i-repair lang sana ang mga classrooms na ito.

Secondly, Mr. Speaker, we should and we propose that the curriculum be restudied. Mr. Speaker, I know that this will generate a lot of debate but I hope that our colleagues will listen for awhile. Sa ngayon, umaabot sa nine to eleven ang subjects ng ating mga estudyante sa elementary at high school. Nakukuba na ang ating mga estudyante sa kakabitbit ng napakaraming libro. Subalit ang tanong ko ho: Ito ba ay angkop pa rin sa pangangailangan ng ating bansa sa ngayon? Ang kanila po bang pinag-aralan ay nagagamit nila sa kanilang buhay sa labas ng paaralan at magagamit kapagka sila ay naghanap ng trabaho?
I can only cite myself as an example, Mr. Speaker, but mula po nung natapos ako nung high school hindi ko pa nagamit ang Calculus, hindi ko pa ho nagamit and Trigonometry, hindi ko pa ho nagamit and Algebra, iyung Geometry, sa bilyar ko lang nagamit. At iyong mga ibang itinuturo ay marapat sigurong ituro sa kolehiyo kung nais maging inhinyero ng isang bata. Iyong mga ibang itinuturo, marapat sigurong ibigay na lamang nating sa kanila sa kolehiyo o bilang elective pagdating ng high school.

Bakit mag-aaral ng Chemistry? Toyo patis at suka lang naman paghahaluin mo pag kakain ka. Bakit kelangan mo bang alamin kung acid o base ang ang pagkain para mabusog ka? Basta may pagkain ka sa harap mo, mabubuhay ka na!

Bakit pa may Values Education? Eh yung mga pulitiko nga natin sila mismo nanloloko sa atin! Sila ang mas may kailangan nun hindi ang mga ordinaryong Pinoy! Kung minsan nga mga nagtuturo mismo walang values. :p

Bakit pa mag-aaral ng Science eh mamamatay din lang naman tayong lahat. Pag abo na tayo, wala na bearing kung ano man grade mo sa mga subjects mo.

Bakit pa merong PE? Pagod ka na nga kakalakad sa buong campus, pagtetext, facebook, pag copy-paste ng project sa internet at pangongopya ng assignments tapos papagurin ka pa pagtakbo takbo sa basketbol court? Makatao ba yun?!!

Buti pa yung ROTC may silbi. Nakakapraktis ka kumanta kapag late ka dumating. Sing and dance pa ipapagawa sa iyo depende sa topak ni Officer. Siyempre tuwang tuwa ka naman kasi yun naman pangarap mo sa buhay mo, ang makapagperform sa harap ng mga tao!

REASON 3: KAWAWA ANG MGA BUSINESSMEN AT MEDIA PAG MATALINO NA ANG MGA PINOY

Imagine mo na lang kung lalawak ang pang-unawa ng mga Pinoy sa pagdedesisyon. Di na sila basta basta maloloko ng mga advertisement sa TV. Mahihirapan sila magbenta ng mga walang kwentang produkto nila. So paano na sila makakabakasyon sa Boracay?

Paano na ang pagbili nila ng mga malalawak na bukirin na papatayuan nila ng mga mansiyon nila kapag na-realize ng mga Pinoy na mas mabisa pa rin ang ampalaya, malunggay, atbp. sa palengke kesa sa mga gulay na nasa loob ng kapsula?

Paano na ang mga electric bills, water bills, phone bills, allowance ng mga anak, allowance ng mga anak sa labas, panggastos ng pamilya, panggastos ng pamilya sa kabit, atbp., kung marealize ng mga Pinoy na di naman ibig sabihin na pag mas mahal eh mas matibay, mas mahal mas maganda, na pag mas mura mas lowtech...

Kawawa din ang media kapag matalino ang mga Pinoy kasi marerealize nila na nakakabobo na mga telenobela at ibang palabas sa local tv. Babawalan na rin nila mga anak nila manood ng tv kasi puro lang naman katarantaduhan natutunan nila sa local tv. Kawawa din ang mga reporter kasi mawawalan na sila ng credibilidad pag malaman nila na madali lang pala balubaluktutin mga impormasyon para maging pabor sa sino mang gustong magbayad.

Pwede din kumita si teacher ng extra. Kausapin lang management ng bus na kukunin ulit serbisyo nila sa susunod na taon kapalit ang 'financial donation' sa bulsa ni teacher!

3. PROJECTS, FOLDERS AND PAPERS


Sa kagustuhang kumita ni teacher, kahit pagbebenta papasukin!

Magpapaproject si teacher at iipunin ang lahat ng sliding folders at ibebenta sa pinakamalapit na suking tindahan...

Ang mga lamang papel ng folder ay itatago ang magandang pagkakagawa para gawing project ng anak sa takdang panahon. Ang iba ay ibebenta ng per dangkal!

Pag hanapin ng student yung project, just in case hanapin lang, sasabihin ni teacher na tinatago para sa school evaluation. Lusot na!

General Tips for Studying Mathematics: How to Study Math Part 2

These are some general tips that where either important enough to single out or just didn’t seem to fit into any of the other sections.

• Go To Class. Remember that math is cumulative. If you don’t go to class you will miss important material that will be used in later sections and/or important announcements.

• Get to Class On Time. Sometime important announcements are only given during the first few minutes of a class.

• LISTEN During Class. In order to get something out of the class you need to listen while in class. Often this can be difficult to do but it is very important. Sometimes important ideas will not be written down on the board, but instead just spoken by the instructor. Watch for things the instructor emphasizes, even if just in words. This often means the instructor thinks it’s important. The more important that an instructor thinks a topic is, the more likely that it will show up on the exam! 

• Take Good Notes. Try to write down everything that instructor puts on board. It may seem easy when watching the instructor, but it often is not so easy when it comes time for you to do it. A good set of notes will help remind you how to do these problems. For some instructors writing down everything may be difficult. In these cases you should try to write down as much as possible. 

Note as well that this seems to contradict the previous tip. It is often hard to both listen and take a good set of notes. This is something that one often only gains with practice. You need to be able to listen while you are writing down the important parts of the lecture.

If you find that are having trouble both listening and taking good notes then you might consider bringing in a tape recorder and record the lecture. Note however that prior to doing this you should first speak with your instructor. There are a few instructors out there in the world that do not like to have their lectures recorded. 

• Ask Questions. If you don’t understand something then ask your instructor. Chances are you are not the only one who doesn’t understand. 

• Listen When Others Ask Questions. When other students ask questions make sure you listen to both the question and the answer. It may be that the student asking the question thought of something that you didn’t think of. 

• Review Notes After Class. After each class you should review your notes. Note the topics that you found confusing and formulate questions that you can ask your instructor or tutor to help you understand the topic. 

• Make a Set of Index Cards. Make a set of index cards with important formulas and concepts on them. You can carry these around with you to look over when you’ve got a few spare minutes. Use them to help you memorize the important formulas and concepts. 

• Learn The (Proper) Notation. Instructors will assume you know it so you’ll need to and many instructors will take points off for bad notation. 

• Get Into A Study Group. It is often helpful to study in groups. People often look at things differently so someone else may see how to solve a problem that can’t do or understand a topic that you find confusing.

• Note Due Dates. Write down the due dates for homework and dates for exams someplace you’ll see them so you don’t forget about them.

• Budget Adequate Time For Studying/Homework. It often takes more time studying mathematics to learn the subject than you may require in other classes. Homework will often take more time than you had originally thought it would. Keep this in mind as you budget time. 

• Do Homework After Each Class. At the end of each class budget some time to look over the homework from that days lecture and attempt to do it Doing this will allow you time to really work at understanding the concepts covered that day. Do not wait until the last minute to do the homework as this often results in an incomplete homework set and/or an incomplete understanding of the concept.

• Do Homework Without Notes and Book. After the first few homework problems, put your notes and book up and try to do the remaining problems without referring to your notes and/or book. In most cases you will not have these during your exams so get used to doing problems without them. 

• Do More Homework. Do not limit yourself to just the homework that your instructor assigns. The more problems that you work the better off you’ll be. 

• Practice, Practice, Practice. Practice as much as possible. The only way to really learn how to do problems is work lots of them. The more you work, the better prepared you will be come exam time.

• Persevere. You will not just instantly get every topic that is covered in a math class. There will be some topics that you will have to work at before you completely understand. The only way to really grasp some topics is to go home and think about it and work some problems. You will often find that after a little work a topic that initially baffled you will all of a sudden make sense.

• Keep Old Homework and Exams. Do not throw away homework and exams once you get them back. The homework is a good source of study material for exams and both the homework and exams is a good source of study material for comprehensive final exams (if you’ve got one). 

• Don’t Forget Your Textbook. If you get stuck on a topic that was discussed in class do not forget that you do have a textbook. Often the text book will contain examples not worked in class and/or a different approach to a problem. 

• Seek Help If You Need It. If you are having trouble with your math class you have many options open to you and you should take advantage of them. You can go to your instructor’s office hours, go to the tutoring room or hire a tutor to get help.

• Have the Proper Attitude. Always do the best that you can. Do not do try to do just enough to get by. Doing this can lead to major problems if you aren’t careful. If you are trying to do just enough to get by then all it takes is one bad exam and you are now failing the course. You should always do the best that you can and strive for the best grade that you can possible get.

How to Study Mathematics Part 1

Before I get into the tips for how to study math let me first say that everyone studies differently and there is no one right way to study for a math class. There are a lot of tips in this document and there is a pretty good chance that you will not agree with all of them or find that you can’t do all of them due to time constraints. There is nothing wrong with that. We all study differently and all that anyone can ask of us is that we do the best that we can. It is my intent with these tips to help you do the best that you can given the time that you’ve got to work with.

Now, I figure that there are two groups of people here reading this document, those that are happy with their grade, but are interested in what I’ve got to say and those that are not happy with their grade and want some ideas on how to improve. Here are a couple of quick comments for each of these groups.

If you have a study routine that you are happy with and you are getting the grade you want from your math class you may find this an interesting read. There is, of course, no reason to change your study habits if you’ve been successful with them in the past. However, you might benefit from a comparison of your study habits to the tips presented here.

If you are not happy with your grade in your math class and you are looking for ways to improve your grade there are a couple of general comments that I need to get out of the way before proceeding with the tips. Most people who are doing poorly in a math class fall into three main categories.

The first category consists of the largest group of students and these are students that just do not have good study habits and/or don’t really understand how to study for a math class. Students in this category should find these tips helpful and while you may not be able to follow all of them hopefully you will be able to follow enough of them to improve your study skills.

The next category is the people who spend hours each day studying and still don’t do well. Most of the people in this category suffer from inefficient study habits and hopefully this set of notes will help you to study more efficiently and not waste time.

The final category is those people who simply aren’t spending enough time studying. Students are in this category for a variety of reasons. Some students have job and/or family commitments that prevent them from spending the time needed to be successful in a math class. To be honest there isn’t a whole lot that I can do for you if that is your case other than hopefully you will become a more efficient in your studies after you are
through reading this. The vast majority of the students in this category unfortunately, don’t realize that they are in this category. Many don’t realize how much time you need to spend on studying in order to be successful in a math class. Hopefully reading this document will help you to realize that you do need to study more. Many simply aren’t willing to make the time to study as there are other things in their lives that are more important to them. While that is a decision that you will have to make, realize that eventually you will have to take the time if you want to pass your math course. Now, with all of that out of the way let’s get into the tips. I’ve tried to break down the hints and advice here into specific areas such as general study tips, doing homework,, studying for exams, etc. However, there are three broad, general areas that all of these tips will fall into.


Math is Not a Spectator Sport
You cannot learn mathematics by just going to class and watching the instructor lecture and work problems. In order to learn mathematics you must be actively involved in the learning process. You’ve got to attend class and pay attention while in class. You’ve got to take a good set of notes. You’ve got to work homework problems, even if the instructor doesn’t assign any. You’ve got to study on a regular schedule, not just the night before exams. In other words you need to be involved in the learning process. 


The reality is that most people really need to work to pass a math class, and in general they need to work harder at math classes than they do with their other classes. If all that you’re willing to do is spend a couple of hours studying before each exam then you will find that passing most math classes will be very difficult. If you aren’t willing to be actively involved in the process of learning mathematics, both inside and outside of the class room, then you will have trouble passing any math class. 


Work to Understand the Principles
You can pass a history class by simply memorizing a set of dates, names and events. You will find, however, that in order to pass a math class you will need to do more than just memorize a set of formulas. While there is certainly a fair amount of memorization of formulas in a math class you need to do more. You need to understand how to USE the formulas and that is often far different from just memorizing them. Some formulas have restrictions on them that you need to know in order to correctly use them. For instance, in order to use the quadratic formula you must have the quadratic in standard form first. You need to remember this or you will often get the wrong answer!


Other formulas are very general and require you to identify the parts in the problem that correspond to parts in the formula. If you don’t understand how the formula works and the principle behind it, it can often be very difficult to use the formula. For example, in a calculus course it’s not terribly difficult to memorize the formula for integration by parts for integrals. However, if you don’t understand how to actually use the formula and identify the appropriate parts of the integral you will find the memorized formula worthless. 


Mathematics is Cumulative 
You’ve always got to remember that mathematics courses are cumulative. Almost everything you do in a math class will depend on subjects that you’ve previously learned. This goes beyond just knowing the previous sections in your current class to needing to remember material from previous classes. You will find a college algebra class to be very difficult without the knowledge that you learned in your high school algebra class. You can’t do a calculus class without first taking (and understanding) an Algebra and a Trigonometry class. 


So, with these three main ideas in mind let’s proceed with some more specific tips to studying for a math class. Note as well that several of the tips show up in multiple sections since they are either super important tips or simply can fall under several general topics.
